JANUARY 12 2014 - Nicole P. and Alex
We spent the day touring through Alta. We walked through the
city and visited the Alta College and a Sami Kindergarten. We then visited the original church in Alta,
which was the only building left after the Germans burned everything during
WWII. On the way down from the church, we stopped a
couple kids on what we’ve dubbed a slooter (sled-scooter) and took some
photos. The slooter seems to be a common
form of transportation around Alta, as the sidewalks are often covered in a
fine layer of ice.
We had a bitterly cold
walk to the restaurant we ate lunch at, the Altafjord Gjestegaard. The view of
the fjord was amazing, and we were able to catch it during the four hours of
daylight we have here. We then left back to the hotel, had class, then some of
us decided to hike up the nearby mountain Komsa in our free time. To climb the mountain, our group followed a
path the local school children created including ropes to help climb the
steeper sections. The climb took the
group around a half hour, but was more than worth it as we were gifted with a
fantastic view of the city
